HUB & SPOKE Model
The LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) Hub-Spoke Model is a system architecture commonly used by laboratories, especially those with multiple collection centers, to streamline operations and manage workflows effectively. In this model, the “Hub” refers to a central processing or data management center, while the “Spokes” are the various collection centers or remote locations that send samples, data, or requests to the central Hub for analysis, processing, or management.
Here’s a breakdown of how the Hub-Spoke model works in the context of a LIMS platform:
1. Centralized Hub:
Main Processing Center: This is the core of the system, where all data processing, analysis, and final reporting occur. The Hub typically hosts the LIMS software, ensuring consistent data management, reporting, and regulatory compliance across all collection points.
Data Storage & Integration: It manages all laboratory data, including patient samples, results, test protocols, and workflows. It often includes features for data security, audit trails, and advanced analytics.
2. Spokes (Collection Centers):
Remote Locations: These are smaller facilities or collection centers that are geographically spread out but are connected to the central Hub via a secure network. Each spoke is responsible for collecting samples, entering data, and possibly performing initial testing or sample preparation.
Data Submission: Spokes can send data and samples electronically to the Hub, eliminating paper-based processes and minimizing the chance of errors or delays.
Remote Access: Collection centers may have limited access to the full functionality of the LIMS but can submit data and track the status of samples.
3. Communication Flow:
From Spokes to Hub: Each collection center (spoke) can send patient or sample data to the Hub via electronic means. The Hub processes this data, performs tests, and stores results.
From Hub to Spokes: The Hub sends back reports, notifications, or sample analysis results to the spoke for further processing or dissemination to clients or patients.
4. Benefits of Hub-Spoke LIMS Model:
Efficiency: The centralized Hub allows for streamlined data processing, real-time updates, and consistent workflows across all collection centers.
Scalability: The model is highly scalable, as additional collection centers can be added easily without disrupting the central processing system.
Cost-Effective: By using a shared central system, laboratories can reduce costs associated with maintaining multiple systems at each collection center.
Data Integrity & Compliance: Ensures all data is securely stored, tracked, and processed in accordance with industry regulations (e.g., HIPAA, ISO standards).
Flexibility: Laboratories can easily monitor operations, analyze performance, and optimize workflows from a central dashboard.

- Test can be configured as in-house / Hub. Samples sent to Hub will follow this workflow.
- Test Codes should be identical in Hub and Spoke.
- LR Number from the Spoke can be imported once the sample is received in the phlebotomy.
- BackBone can generate the list of investigations done for each spoke. This report can be used for accounting. Application will pick the guideline value fixed in the Hub for the investigation.
- Bar Code stuck on the sample container will be used for tracking samples in Spoke Server. The same bar code will be used at Hub for processing the lab tests.
In essence, the Hub-Spoke Model for LIMS offers laboratories the flexibility, efficiency, and scalability needed to handle complex workflows, multiple sites, and large volumes of data, while ensuring streamlined communication and centralized control. This is particularly valuable in scenarios with multiple collection centers that need to operate in sync with a main processing facility.
